Set back from the teeming crowds of Oxford Street, Marylebone is the West End’s best kept secret. Elegant period buildings line its streets and, despite its location in the very centre of London, there is a calm, sophisticated feel to the area with chic shops and stylish cafes favoured by actors, popstars and models. However, alongside the boutiques, there are the practical sort of shops that make Marylebone a charmingly self-contained community from which there is no need to stray if you’re feeling lazy.
There’s a Boots pharmacist, a Waitrose for quality supermarket shopping, an opticians and one of London’s top independent bookshops, Daunt, which specialises in travel writing but includes a fantastic range of fiction chosen by its expert booksellers. If on the other hand, you want a culture hit, the outstanding Wallace Collection of art, furniture and armour is homed in a beautiful period house in nearby Manchester Square. Also, a short walk away is idyllic Regent’s Park and its Open Air Theatre where you can enjoy top quality drama against the backdrop of the setting sun.
